Abstract

This article provides an overview of, and suggests the reasons behind, the developments in internationalisation of higher education in Europe. In the conclusions, some comparative observations on developments in Europe and the United States will be presented.

Author Biography

Hans De Wit

Hans de Wit is director of foreign relations at the University of Amsterdam. In 1994 he served as the president of the European Association for International Education (EAIE). He was a visiting lecturer in the Department of Sociology at Boston College during the spring of 1995. His publications include International Education in Europe: A Professional View on the Memorandum on Higher Education in the European Community, 1992 (EAIE paper).
