Abstract

This article addresses the decline in the number of U.S. students participating in study abroad programs in Latin America (particularly in Argentina) as reflected in recent statistics. It also explores the possible causes of this decline and argues that the current geopolitical context and biased narratives originating from a hegemonic global North influence existing representations of the region and, ultimately, students’ motivations for preferring Europe as an academic destination. To this end, it employs a mixed-methods approach and applies concepts developed by Mignolo (2010, 2011, 2018), Mignolo and Walsh (2018), Boaventura de Sousa Santos (2011), Quijano (2000), and Conrad (2016). The article concludes that these factors negatively impact the choice of Latin America as an academic destination, and that, while it is possible to implement specific strategies at the local or regional level to improve this situation, as long as no decolonial alternatives to the Western paradigm are found, the global problem of how Latin America is perceived through the lens of this paradigm will persist.
