Abstract

This article presents a study designed to evaluate available training materials, in terms of their value to study abroad professionals, focused on culture and language learning strategies for study abroad program professionals who prepared study abroad participants. In addition, the study intended to provide the international education field with ideas for language and culture teaching, and ultimately the enhancement of language and culture learning in and out of class during the study abroad sojourn.

Author Biographies

Joseph G. Hoff

 Joseph G. Hoff received his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in the Comparative and International Development Education program. He is presently Associate Director of the International Education and Outreach Office of Oregon State University and Academic Coordinator of the International Degree program. He has his M.A. in Spanish from St. Louis University and an M.I.A. in Intercultural Management from the School for International Training. He has over 15 years of experience in international education, including four years as an English teacher on the J.E.T. program in Japan, and as Assistant Director of study abroad at Brown University. He has taught culture and language-learning strategies at the University of Minnesota’s CARLA Summer Institute and was recently a guest speaker at the Summer Institute for Intercultural Communication in Oregon. He is a certified IDI administrator/trainer. 

R. Michael Paige

R. Michael Paige is Professor of International and Intercultural Education in the Department of Educational Policy and Administration at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. Michael has worked as a professional international/intercultural educator for over 35 years in the private and public sectors, beginning with his service as a U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer English Teacher in Turkey (1965-1967). He has extensive experience as an intercultural trainer and training consultant having worked with Fortune 500 companies, universities in the U.S. and abroad, non-profit/community organizations, ministries of education, and public school districts. Over the course of his career, he has lived and worked in Turkey, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, Kenya, Hong Kong, Japan, and Australia. He was a Senior Fulbright Scholar at Kenyatta University in Nairobi, Kenya (1993-94), Visiting Professor at Nagoya University (2003-04), and Visiting Research Professor at the University of South Australia (2004). He is a certified IDI trainer/administrator and has also been on the faculty of the Summer Institute for Intercultural Communication since 1979. Michael was co-author of the Maximizing Study Abroad Research Project. Currently, his is Co-Principal Investigator on a Title VI project: SAGE: Study Abroad for Global Engagement Research Project. Michael has also edited Education for the Intercultural Experience (1993) and is the co-editor with Dale Lange of the newly-released volume, Culture as the Core: Perspectives on Culture in Second Language Learning (2003). He has been honored as the 2007 recipient of the Forum on Education Abroad’s Peter A. Wollitzer Award and as Senior Interculturalist in 2003 by the Society for Intercultural Education, Training, and Research—Japan.
